Cuckoo Clocks Striking The Hour

Friday, January 30th, 2009
Barbara Tobiasz asked:

Back in the fourteenth century mechanical clocks appeared. A bell sounded every hour. These clocks did not have hands or faces. The speed of the clocks movement was driven by weights and springs. The most important event in clock making took place in the early nineteenth century. It was the introduction of mass production and interchangeable parts. Before this time clocks were only available to the wealthy.

The cuckoo clock is typically pendulum driven and strikes the hours using small bellows and pipes that imitate the call of the common cuckoo in addition to striking a wire gong. This mechanism was produced since the eighteenth century and has remained almost without variation until the present.

In the nineteen fifties electrical currents ran through quartz crystals which caused vibrations to operate the movements. This type of movement is used in many of our wall clocks today.

The Black Forest is a wooded mountain range in southwestern Germany. Wood carving is a traditional industry in this region. There is a legend that is told over and over again that the cuckoo clock was invented by a Black Forest mechanic This has been found to be untrue. As early as sixteen fifty the bird with the distinctive call was written in reference books. It took nearly a century for the cuckoo clock to find its way to the Black Forest. The people did develop the cuckoo clock industry and are still coming up with new designs and technical improvements. This has made the cuckoo clock a valued work of art all over the world.

Most familiar to many is the design that is conventionally carved from wood and made to hang from the wall. These are usually decorated with leaves and animals and have an automated bird that appears through a small trap door while the clock is striking the hour. Some other familiar features of cuckoo clocks are some can be musical, some have sounds of chimes, they can be pendulum or quartz driven and feature a novelty and have elaborate carvings.

No matter what kind of life style, purchasing a wall mounted cuckoo clock is a very special moment in ones life. These clocks seem to fill your home with love and laughter. They bring a gift of charm and sophistication with their melodies and motion.

The movement is the heart of your clock. Some cuckoo clocks need to be key wound daily or weekly. There are also quartz clocks that are battery operated. Some batteries last years without needing to be replaced. You do get a different feeling from a quartz clock than mechanically driven clocks. The animated cuckoo is usually made out of plastic and gives off a recorded cuckoo sound. All are fitted with manual volume controls and shut off switches. They also have sensors that silence the clock after dark.

Since its popularity, the cuckoo clock has been a common character in children’s literature, comics and cartoons. This is due to children that are amazed by the magic of the happy bird that lives in the clock and jumps out to announce the hour. This is one reason why you find wall novelty cuckoo clocks hanging on walls in many children’s rooms. In my daughters bed room she has one that features Mickey Mouse.

You literally can find a cuckoo clock that will fit in any room for any taste and will truly become a focal point and conversation piece. The price depends on the quality and what materials were used in the construction of the clock. You can find cuckoo clock prices starting under one hundred dollars and going up to thousands of dollars depending on the artwork and the mechanical features involved.

For warranties and repairs you should check with the company you purchase the clock from. If you purchase one that was made in the Black Forest you will receive a certificate of authenticity. They are held to higher standards and are always mechanically powered. The certificate shows its internationality by being written bilingually in German and in English.

Our rapid advancement in technology keeps scientists and craftsmen working to create a cuckoo clock with one hundred percent accuracy. We have come close and we are destined to continue.

Travel Alarm Clocks Wake You Up Like Clockwork

Friday, January 30th, 2009
Bradlley Mckoy asked:

Trying to get away from it all without sleeping through it all? Travel alarm clocks are just the thing you need to get you wherever and whenever on time. Whether it’s an old friend’s wedding, a business conference, an important lecture, or an international flight that you just can’t afford to miss, don’t leave home without your travel alarm clock.

Traveling, especially to a different time zone, can be very disconcerting. Not only does your body have to adjust to the new time zone, you might also find yourself repeatedly adding or subtracting numbers of hours from the time that you have been used to. A travel alarm clock is a handy contraption that will keep you from hyperventilating over the change in time zones. You can set it up in any way that suits you, making allowances for time zones and eliminating any fear of missing your appointments.

Smaller Is Definitely Better

Travel alarm clocks come in different shapes and different sizes. The biggest one in the world is in London and is fondly known as Big Ben. You wouldn’t want to try packing that away in your overnight bag, however. For travel alarm clocks, the time-honored rule on minimalism applies: less is more. In fact, it’s not so much the size of your travel alarm clock that counts; its how you use it!

The first thing to look for in a good travel alarm clock is portability. This shouldn’t be a problem as most travel alarm clocks are relatively small. However, you do want to make sure that the casing is tough enough to withstand being thrown about in your suitcase in the baggage hold of a 747-400. A broken alarm clock will do you no good, for obvious reasons.

Your Clock and You

We’ve all seen, and probably owned at some point, those colorful battery-powered or wind-up analog clocks with big faces. However, travel alarm clocks have since evolved and are now available in various stages of complexity, from the simple wind-up variety to the more complex digital clocks chock-full of add-ons, bells, and whistles.

There are digital travel alarm clocks with FM radios. Simply set the alarm the night before and when its time to wake up, voila! You’ll find yourself pleasantly waking up to your favourite radio show. Other digital travel alarm clocks allow you to set not only the time, but also the alarm tone. Light sleepers can choose discreet beeps or pleasant chimes. If you are the type who likes being lulled to sleep by the dulcet tones of a jackhammer, you can select more alarming sounds, such as jangling bells, deafening horns, or your mother-in-law’s laughter. All the better to wake you up, my dear!

Who Says Power Isn’t Everything?

Sure, timing is everything but it runs on power. Make sure your travel alarm clock is going to be on time by starting with that little thing that makes it work in the first place - the power supply. Check those batteries periodically. It’s difficult to determine if your batteries are running out so keep them refreshed, just to be on the safe side. If your travel alarm clock vibrates, the batteries might move. So, check them often and make sure they are lodged in their little compartments correctly.

It’s also a smart idea to make sure your travel alarm clock comes with an ac/dc power adaptor. Unless the unthinkable happens and there is a power outage, you know you’re going to get to the church or the board room on time with a steady power supply. And even if the power does go off, the battery will kick in straightaway, keeping you on time and in time! Constant vigilance is all that’s required to keep your travel alarm clock working.

Forget about the family dog or your diamonds. In this day and age where time is money, the good old travel alarm clock is set to be your best friend. You don’t have to feed it or take it to the toilet. It requires no more attention than a sleeping baby. It just sits there, making cute noises, waiting patiently for you to tell it to shut up. Best of all, it sure beats having to endure that annoying hotel wake up call any day.

The Atomic Clock - Always Accurate

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
Charles Kassotis asked:

If you look around your home, you’ll likely find several timepieces of varying sizes. From the watch on your hand to the grandfather clock in the living room, and from the alarm clock in your bedroom to the computer clock on your desk, most people have several clocks available. And at any given time, few of those clocks will show precisely the same time. So how do you know which is really correct?

There are several ways of keeping time. The most commonly recognized is based on the Earth’s movement through space. But those rotations are very large and the potential for gaining or losing seconds is incredible. A more precise method of timekeeping is atomic time. Very simply, atomic time measures the pulses and absorptions of electromagnetic waves. Generally, atomic time is considered to be the most accurate available.

When you choose an atomic clock, the clock’s time is kept current through the use of radio signals between the nearest atomic time-keeping device and your clock. There are several of those devices around the world, including on in Colorado that controls many of the US atomic clocks.

Atomic time keeping has been around for more than a half century, but it’s only been over the past few years that the technology is generally available at a reasonable price to the public. The first few atomic clocks were very austere models, meant to be accurate time keeping devices and nothing more. Today, there are plenty of options if you’re looking for accuracy without sacrificing beauty.

Grandfather clocks are one of the most recent advances in atomic clock technology. Because these clocks depend on the swinging of a pendulum to keep track of time, they are notorious for gaining time right after they’re wound and losing time as the clockworks run down. Some grandfather clocks no longer depend on the pendulum for timekeeping, making them more accurate. But more recently, the atomic clock works have been incorporated into grandfather clock cases. As is true with all atomic clocks, the atomic clocks in grandfather clock cases are periodically updated to be kept completely accurate.

Most people tend to truly believe that computers are right. After all, computers know the time and date automatically, right? But remember that someone set that date at the beginning of the computer’s life, and that you may even have adjusted the time for daylight savings time at some point. If you want your computer clock to be always accurate, you can download a program that will have your computer periodically check in for the official atomic time in your time zone.

Over the ages, people have developed many methods and utilized many concepts for determining time. Sundials and hourglasses can give an idea, but are something less than accurate. Rotation of the sun, locations of stars and the rise and fall of tides have all been used to help account for the passage of hours, though they weren’t accurate enough to count minutes or seconds. The atomic clock is man’s latest step toward keeping an accurate track of time.

How to Find and Buy Antique Clocks

Saturday, January 24th, 2009
Barry Share asked:

Can you still get an antique clock at the right price? With the falling stock markets and house prices around the world more and more people are seeing their wealth they have amassed deteriorate before their very eyes. Smart investors are cashing in their stocks and bonds and buying tangible assets.

Assets they can actually see and touch that will increase in value and edge against inflation. One of these desirable assets is antique clocks and with the vast and varied amount on the market and places to buy them, from General Antique Shops, Auctions, and Classified Advertisements to name a few This article will aim to help you decide where you will buy your clocks from.

Classified Advertisements. There are two main points to remember when scanning through the local or national classified ads.

1. There are, as in all trades and types of business unscrupulous people that place small ads without declaring that they are ‘trade’ unlike bona fide clock dealers, they are not knowledgeable horologists and sell through the classified section in the belief there will be no comeback, when you later discover on closer inspection your clock is not as advertised. Beware of the lovely retired old couple selling a clock that has been in the family since Noah built the ark and had just stopped running as you walked in the front door.

2. Take note of the traveling distance. I have wasted many hours and gallons of fuel viewing clocks that have been over exaggerated by enthusiastic sellers on initial telephone conversations. Despite these drawbacks, there are bargains to be had right now as the credit crunch takes hold and people need cash. Always remember the golden rule. Make sure the clock the seller is selling is theirs to sell before parting with any money. Always get a signed receipt, which ideally should include a good description of the clock, clearly stating any identifying marks, particularly maker’s name on the dial or identifying marks on the movement.

General Antique Shops. It seems there is at least one antique shop in every town you go to. These range from the smart up market antique shops which are well respectable establishments usually selling high quality restored clocks for which they expect top prices. At the other end of the spectrum there is the downmarket back street bric-a-brac shop, they may have clocks for sale but inevitably will be of low quality, the clocks may be working but you will find these traders do not offer much of a guarantee. This can only be viewed as a lack of belief in the reliability of the clocks they have to offer.

Auctions. If you check out your local directory you will find any number of auction rooms and auctioneers and valuers listed. Some of the larger firms could have specialist sales for clocks two or three times a year, all will have some sort of antique auction at least once a month and general sales and house-clearance weekly.

All the auctions will have one or two viewing days before the start and most publish some sort of catalogue giving you a little time to check things out. Each lot is sold as seen with all descriptions given in good faith. Sole responsibility is on you the bidder to satisfy him/her self that all is well before bidding. To make a bid on any lot you will be required to register and will receive a numbered card or paddle with which you will indicate your willingness to make a bid for your chosen lot to the auctioneer If you are unknown to the auctioneers they will insist on clearing your cheque before allowing you to take the clock you have successfully won a bid for. So if you are unfamiliar with the auction environment take cash with you, up to the limit you are prepared to pay for the clock.

The golden rule when bidding at any auction is to write down the maximum amount you are prepared to pay for each lot on your catalogue at the days viewing before the auction If any particular lot reaches one penny more than your maximum amount written down, then walk away before you find yourself in a bidding frenzy and tempted to pay more than you had intended. Accept that the clock was not meant for you.

There are more places offering opportunities for buying good clocks like antique and clock fairs. Wherever you buy remember the choice is yours, always be thorough and ask questions regarding any repair or restoration work.

Don’t overlook transport; everybody doesn’t have a vehicle that can carry a longcase. Only buy a clock if you really like it and you will be able to live with a clock you love.

5 Things to Consider Before Purchasing Your Next Clock

Saturday, January 24th, 2009
Casey Markee asked:

An exquisite time piece can be more than just a reminder of how time flies. It can also be a family heirloom passed down from generation to generation with the greatest of care. Who doesn’t have an aunt, uncle, or grandparent that they stayed with as a kid that had a wonderful ticking clock or a chime clock that would musically remind you of the hour?

Will your timepiece be something that your family will pass on for generations? If not, here are a few things you may want to consider before making your next purchase.

1. Service: When purchasing an expensive timepiece it is always good to find a company that stands behind their product. Do they have a warranty on the piece you bought, if so, how long and what does it cover? Do they sell the parts needed for repairs or will they have to order them? Also, how long have they been in business? Purchase an expensive clock from a store that may go out of business and you will have no place to ask questions or get service done in the future.

2. Style: With the fashion styles changing with the season, think about what you want in a clock before purchasing. Will you be living in your current location five or ten years from now? If not, will the clock you purchase fit your new location? Purchase a clock that is a reflection of your definition of “timeless.” Find a clock style that fits your personality and it will mostly likely fit your home decor for many years to come.

3. Size: Clocks come in many different sizes and shapes. If you are looking for a wall clock; determine its weight to see wether or not the wall you are planning on hanging it on will hold the weight. If you are picking a free standing clock; determine the weight of the clock to see how to move it in the future. If your clock is an outdoor clock; determine that the place you will hang it will stand against the elements and hold the clock secure for many years to come.

4. Sound: Clocks have variety of different sounds to them. It may be hard to tell how loud a specific clock is when you are in a clock store. The sound of a clock in a store full of clocks will sound quite different at night in the quiet of your own home. Take a sound recording of both the ticks and the chime and play them for yourself or your family during the quietest time in your house to determine if the clock will fit with your needs.

5. Maintenance: Clocks are fine pieces of art created with a number of different materials. Those made of fine woods and metals may require specials cleaners to help preserve their excellence, and a good store or online dealer should be able to sell you the correct cleaners for your clock. Most clocks also require maintenance of the internal components. Ask for a recommended scheduled maintenance routine and keep it in close to the clock so you will remember when maintenance may be needed.

Time: Webster’s Dictionary defines time as the system of sequential relationship that any event has to any other, as past, present, or future being indefinite and continuous.

I’ve always thought of time as the most precious gift that one can give, the giving of time is the giving of oneself, making the recipient more important than any other event that may be occurring. A timepiece not only stands for the seconds and minutes that pass before our eyes, buy also the memories and moments that we will remember for a lifetime.

Choose your next clock wisely, that next timepiece you purchase may just mark the clicks and chimes of the most memorable moments of your life!

Getting Confused With Home Décor, Try Wall Clocks

Friday, January 23rd, 2009
Foryourhome asked:

History of Wall clocks

History has seen that wall clocks have played an important part in our homes. Wall clocks have been in existence for hundreds of years and have evolved into highly attractive, accurate timepieces that are available in any number of styles and designs from its crude beginnings. They have been around for decades and are excellently used for both functional and decorative purposes. Early clocks were natural progression from Huge Sundial which had a totally natural technology of telling the time of the day based on the shadows that the sun’s rays cast on the marked surfaces. Most wall clocks were then evolved from sundials – in fact, some wall clocks were purposely designed to look like old sundials. As technology changed from natural to analog, mechanical, they became large and expensive and were usually only on large public places like churches and other public buildings. Domestic wall clocks began to appear in British houses in about 1600. These early clocks, called ‘chamber clocks’, were of the ‘lantern’ type or its easier meaning, brass type because of its make from Brass. They were hung from a hook on the wall and weights hung down below them on ropes, later chains which than evolved into the most popular pendulums. There were up to three weights - for the time, the striking and sometimes also an alarm. The first clocks were made of iron; later brass became the preferred metal, often with thickly gilded dials. It took craftsmen several months to finish one. Only the kings and queens would afford the luxuries of these brass dials in their mansions and palaces. Then history saw the second revolution of large scale changes. Great Britain was the first to revamp the traditional brass dials and introduce the modern clock dials that we have today. Painted dials, heavy work wooden wall clocks soon grew in popularity and were produced for the use of the masses. During this era, wall clocks started to be used not only for timekeeping but also as decorative and commemorative pieces. British industrialist and imperialist started to use them to mark and celebrate various religious and cultural events and even famous sports and war victories. Thomas Kent wall clocks right from the famous Paddington Station Wall Clock today symbolizes the significance of these celebrations in our life. And finally the modern day wall clocks, which are nowadays highly cheap due to mass production and material used like plastic.

The Hands of Time – Wall Clocks

Saturday, January 17th, 2009
Barbara Tobiasz asked:

The first time pieces started approximately 6,000 years ago for religious rituals. These devises were often candles and lamps. Farmers used sections of time for planting, growing and harvesting. It was not necessary to know the exact time.

The next instrument was Sundials from Egypt which marked the daily progress of the suns movement across the sky. This method was known to be accurate and useful. You can still purchase clocks that look like sundials today.  These were made of brass and only the rich could afford them. Briton transformed the brass dials with painted ones. These were inexpensive and clocks started being used for decoration as well as keeping time.

The first antique wall clocks were called lanterns. They were made out of brass, very heavy and were hung on walls. The concept of personal clocks was introduced in the 17th century.

All clocks have inner workings that would surprise and amaze you. We usually just take it for granted. There are analog clocks which have a face and hands and battery operated and there are digital clocks which are usually powered by an electric current with number displays.

Clocks keep cultures and societies united and functioning. Most western cultures value punctuality especially in the business community. There is a saying, “Time is money!”

Most clocks are mass produced now using cheaper materials such as plastic and metals. Most Americans find that clocks are cheaper then most paintings to help fill their empty walls. They also are a status symbol and bring elegance and character to one’s surroundings.

Some types of clocks, but not limited to are: Antique, Wall, Contemporary, Nautical, Atomic, Decorative, Traditional, Mantel, Grandfather, Cuckoo, Kitchen, Alarm, and others. There are two types of movement. They are mechanical and quartz battery operated. Some mechanical clocks produce a chiming sound. Clocks are also powered by solar energy, winding mechanism, and batteries.

Clocks may cover centuries but always give off visual pleasure. Without clocks life would be chaotic. Most humans wear them on their wrists, keep them next to their bed, and display them in almost every room of the house. Although often, they may never pay much thought to their clocks and their function.

Here is a list of a few popular clock brands that are well known for their skilled craftsmanship and supreme quality. Howard Miller Company, Bulova, Geochron , Ridgeway Clock Company and Seth Thomas Clocks.

The next time you look at any type of clock, take a minute and think of what your life would be like if this instrument did not exist.

Build a Wooden Works Clock–a Craftsman’s Delight

Monday, January 12th, 2009
John Mowatt asked:

In the early 1800s a number of American clock makers were producing shelf or mantel clocks in which the movement was made from wood. Gear wheels were shaped from hardwood such as cherry and carefully fitted to run smoothly. Some of these clocks have survived for 200 years or so and are today valuable antiques which sell for thousands of dollars when they come on the market. The average collector can’t afford to buy them of course but there are modern reproductions available, mostly in the form of kits and plans.

Even earlier in the 1700s, tall case grandfather clocks with wooden works were being made by many clockmakers. The tall case left room for the weights which drive the clock to fall further so that the clock would run longer before needing to have the weights raised to the top again.

Building a wooden gear clock takes time and care in the workmanship but it is not really difficult to produce a good working clock. The average home crafter with some wood working skills can do it with simple hand tools just as the early clock makers did. The clock will be a family heirloom which will be passed proudly down through the generations.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago has on display a rare and beautiful wooden gear shelf clock which was made in the early 1800s. This fine clock is still in running order after 200 years. It has been carefully measured and detailed drawings made. These plans with complete building instructions are available for purchase. They show complete details of all the working parts and how they fit together. Detailed drawings of the clock case are also shown including every part of the original antique clock.

Building wooden gear clocks is a great hobby for the craftsman, and anyone can be a craftsman; it only takes careful work. This is not the type of project which can be completed in a few evenings. Rather it is a project for the person who takes great pride in the quality of their work and will spend whatever time is necessary to do a perfect job.The individual parts of such a clock are of very simple design and quite easy to make. The skill comes in finishing each part accurately and making a clock which runs smoothly and thus keeps good time.

To summarise, building a wooden gear clock is perfectly within the ability of almost anyone. It is hard to tell a well made copy of an antique clock from a genuine antique at a quick look. Close inspection by an expert will, of course, show the new wood and materials used to build it establishing its origin beyond doubt. But for the craftsman who made it and for all who see and admire it the clock is a thing of beauty which will tick tock proudly in the home for a lifetime and probably many years after that while keeping good time.

Pre Shopping Guide for Wall Clocks

Saturday, January 10th, 2009
Foryourhome asked:

Firstly understand the rooms in your home where the wall clock is needed. Often we overlook the wall clock as little more than a utility, a structure designed to serve its stated purpose in plain way as possible. Even when we go one step further and decide to use the aesthetic aspect of them, we usually just hang it from any spare wall, an isolated piece neither adding to nor subtracting from the total appearance of the space. However, with a little imagination, you can integrate your wall clocks into your existing wall décor, and make it a part of the overall decorative scheme. Even further, you can use wall clocks themselves as a room’s style, displaying a synchronized display of your own decorative style. Many times this helps us to use different clocks in different rooms of the home depending on taste. Kitchens are many a time suited with floral or food designed based wall clocks. Some Online stores do sell many smaller pendulum wall clocks that are plain and simple. Living Room Wall Clocks have seen lots of ranges which decorative, stylish and functional too. Oversized wooden wall clocks are often used on a large wall whereas in traditional sense, contemporary wall clocks and classic Victorian heavy styles are favorites. Nowadays we have seen modern wall clock has some what seemed to merge with the contemporary style of décor. Bedrooms needs soft touched, light coloured wall clocks. Some may even need a alarm clock like moving pendulum for an early wake up call. Children’s Room seen massive surge in creative wall clocks. Nursery rhyme clock faces, teaching dial wall clocks or cartoon faces are favorites for this room. It is seen that kids like the pendulum wall clock because the long pendulum swings and feel to put them to sleep as they watch it. Lastly, outdoor clocks have become very popular recently. Bold styles ranging from 23 to 31 inches in diameter are often hung outside. This creative approach can add an often welcoming flavor to the back door.

Second most important thing to look while buying them is features like function, style, technology used, price etc. A case made of wood, with glass over the clock face is nice. In some case a clock with a one-piece moulded plastic case and plastic over the clock face is lighter, easier to mount, generally less expensive, less breakable, and cheaper to ship as a gift.
