Two Tried And Tested Methods Of Generating Sales On The Internet

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
David Hurley asked:

as true on the Internet as on the high street that people love buying stuff, especially if it’s been recommended to them by a trustworthy source, but they hate being sold to, especially if the salesperson is somebody they’ve never seen before.

With that in mind, we have to ask ourselves what is the best way for work from home Internet entrepreneurs to generate sales with an online business?

A lot of people think the answer is to build an anonymous, impersonal website and pack it with lots of flashing banners and links to their various offers in the hope that visitors to their site will see one that takes their fancy, click on it, and then buy the product.

If you think that is the way to make money on the Internet, you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

The vast majority of people who visit such a site will be put off by the blatant sales pitch. Their first instinct will be to leave the site never to return to it again.

So, what’s the best way to generate sales on the Internet for the small home-based online entrepreneur?

There seem to be two methods that work well.

1. Selling unique, highly desirable or hard to get products to a well-defined niche market.

2. Using permission marketing techniques to build a list and sell on the back-end.

Each of these two marketing methods can be run with or without the other. Let’s have a look at each of them in more detail.

1. If you have a product that is unique, highly desirable or hard to get, which appeals to a specific niche market and is also easy for you to ship, you could make a lot of money selling it on the Internet, direct from your website.

But how do you know that your product is all of those things?

Easy! Simply test it on eBay.com. If your product sells well on eBay, you can bet that you’ll be able to sell it on a niche website of your own.

When you set up your website, make sure that it’s friendly and easy to navigate. Post information about yourself, not just about your product. Be up-front about yourself and give the visitor a way to get in contact with you.

Post articles about the benefits of the product. Don’t forget to sell the sizzle - sell the dream that the product represents. If your articles are well written you may not even need to do much keyword research in order to get sales, although it is worth checking which keywords generate most searches and incorporating them into your website content.

Start a blog and write about all aspects of your products and services, about your involvement with them, and add a link at the end of each post to your website.

Post a few articles on some of the leading article directories about your product.

Make your product easy to purchase straight from your website. PayPal is an excellent merchant service, and most people feel safe using it on the Internet today.

2. “Permission marketing” is a term that was coined by Seth Godin to describe a method of building trust with customers before pitching your products or services to them. This is by far the best method of selling information and digital products.

Permission marketing is a response to the fact that few people will buy anything from a website that they have never visited before. So, instead of trying to sell something, offer your visitors a unique report, or information kit which they can instantly download after filling in a simple online form.

With permission marketing an auto responder is an essential tool. When a visitor fills in the form on your website, the auto responder will swing into action and direct them to the download page. It will also add their name and e-mail address to your mailing list.

Now you can follow-up with your prospect by sending them more information via e-mail and generate sales by introducing them to your products and services “on the back-end”.

In order for this model to be successful, you have to over-deliver with solid useful well-written expert information. You need to focus on the needs and the situation of your prospects and build up a relationship with them through the written word, as well as by audio and video recordings, forum participation, and so on. Present your products as solutions to their problems and sales will follow.

The key with both methods of selling on the Internet is to present yourself and your products in an open, informative and friendly manner.

Combining the two methods of making money on the Internet is an excellent way to generate sales on the front-end and then follow up with those customers through back-end repeat sales via e-mail.

Bring your Product to Life With Personality

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009
Fran Black asked:

Clad in a pink nightgown, seven-year-old Jessica scans the cereal boxes lined up on top of the refrigerator. Her eyes light up as she reaches the brown box at the end. She leaps in the air and flaps her arms wildly.

“That’s what I want!” she yells, “I’m cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs!”

And she is cuckoo as she sloshes milk over the small brown spheres in her cereal bowl. As I’m certain the exorbitant sugar content cannot have reached her blood yet, I know her behavior is the result of clever branding. Although cereal has little to do with birds, Sonny the Cuckoo Bird has been selling breakfast cereal on television commercials since the early 1960s. And he is quite an effective salesman. Not only is the cereal a core brand for General Mills, but the term “Cocoa Puff” has earned itself a significant cultural reference.

Strange as it may sound, when packaged products take on a personality that consumers can relate to, sales increase. Products come to life when a mascot or animated figure gives the product a face—not just a brand—to trust. This is why children beg a breakfast of Cocoa Puffs, despite its low nutritional content. But certainly naïve children are not the exclusive targets of branding.

When it comes to choosing cleaning products, how many of us picture grim-faced scrub brushes scouring our tubs? Can a competing brand perform as well? We think not, as we drop a bottle of Scrubbing Bubbles into our shopping basket. Mr. Clean, with his sparkling bald head and sailor’s physique, has been mopping floors across the globe since the 50s. A brand’s personality can offer the single most important reason why one brand is chosen over another. Personality gives the consumer something to relate to that can be more vivid than the perceived positioning of the brand. Furthermore, a strong identifiable personality makes it easier for customers and prospects to understand what the marketer has to offer.

This is why Ronald McDonald sells more hamburgers, why the Kool-Aid Man leads in punch sales, and why the Jolly Green Giant dwarfs his competition. This is why we picture companionable lizards when considering which car insurance to buy. When building brand it is well worth the while to assign a mascot to carry the image of the brand.

When considering mascots, it is critical that you convey an image that will appeal to your target audience without alienating or offending part of the population. This was the unfortunate situation that Aunt Jemima found herself in. Aunt Jemima began selling pancake mix and syrups in the late 1800s, when her kerchiefed hair and apron was the stereotypical garb of a black “Mammy.” Indeed, Aunt Jemima was marketed as a slave woman servicing her white family. Plagued with a tarnished image, the company has tried to bring their spokeswoman up-to-date with a younger, more attractive African-American woman wearing a modern hairstyle and pearls. Still, the term “Aunt Jemima” has come to be a somewhat disparaging term. (“Uncle Ben” of Uncle Ben’s Rice has a similar history.)

When choosing an appropriate mascot for your brand, first identify what you are trying to achieve. Who will conceivably buy your product or services? What kind of character would appeal to that audience? Is this a spokesperson that will stand the test of time? In what way will the personality reach out to the consumer and communicate the strengths of your product or service? Is this an image you desire? When you’ve found the right fit, proceed with care—like reputation, image is very difficult to change once it is established. You will know you’ve found the winning spokesperson when the spark brings your product to life.

Why can’t do-gooders appreciate the subtle dangers of a controlled society?

Friday, November 6th, 2009
asked:

“In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had five hundred years of democracy and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.”

- Orson Welles

Don’t we need to remain a dynamic society in order to remain free and competitive?

Go Cuckoo for Condos

Sunday, November 1st, 2009
Mike Andruff asked:

A condominium isn’t usually what a person imagines when they think about buying their dream home. There’s no yard, neighbors live on all sides of you, and there are strata councils to worry about. Many condo developments have restrictions on owning pets, and it’s difficult to have social gatherings because of the lack of space. In addition, the ability to modify the design of the place is very limited. With all of these drawbacks, it’s easy to wonder what the point of buying a condo is at all!

What makes a condo unappealing to some buyers is exactly what makes them perfect homes for others. For instance, the small square footage and absence of a yard makes condos ideal for people who are unable to spend a lot of time on cleaning and upkeep. Especially great for seniors and those with limited mobility, condos require much less effort to maintain than other types of properties.

Having neighbors live above, beside, and below you can add to residents’ feelings of security in the building. In a single family home, there can be a strong sense of being on your own, which leaves some people feeling isolated and vulnerable. For those who are nervous about being totally on their own, having neighbors within arms’ reach can be a great comfort.

Condos are excellent for first time home buyers and those on a limited budget. Condominiums are generally more affordable than detached homes or townhouses, which makes them accessible to a much larger segment of the population. Buyers who would otherwise be unable to buy a home can build up equity and make a solid financial investment if they purchase a condo. In addition, the affordability of condos enables buyers to buy property in pricier locales where housing prices are out of reach.

If budget isn’t a concern, then consider the advantages of living in a luxury condo development. Most feature 24-hour security and amenities such as swimming pools, fitness centers, and rooftop decks for summer entertaining. With modern design and exquisite vantage points of the city, luxury condos can offer buyers a better standard of living than they would find in a traditional house.

Young professionals, couples, retirees, and first time buyers are attracted to condos because of their low maintenance and reasonable pricing. Many are also attracted to the fact that condos are usually located close to city centers, so they’re able to enjoy the vibrant metropolitan lifestyle. Restaurants, galleries, shopping, and entertainment options are all within reach of a downtown condo. Commuting to work is quick and easy thanks to the extensive transportation network found in most major cities. You may even be able to walk to work!

Condominiums are definitely not for everybody. If you have a large family or love to spend time in the garden, you’re probably better suited to a detached home. But if you’re looking for something that will give you a good return on your investment and doesn’t require a lot of upkeep on your part, a condo may be just the type of property you’ve been searching for.
